Selling abroad from Sri Lanka: payments, currency, shipping

Shopify Payments is not available to Sri Lankan stores, so we set up payment providers that accept Sri Lankan businesses, such as PayHere and PayPal, and bank transfer for high-value orders. Prices can show in the buyer’s currency.

Buyers abroad may pay customs duties on arrival, and we say so clearly on the store. We build the store and payments; please confirm export licences and procedures with the NGJA or a licensed agent, because we do not advise on them.

Can you sell gemstones on Shopify?

Yes. Shopify handles loose gemstones and jewellery well, and each product can carry fields for carat, colour, origin, treatment, dimensions and a lab report. You can sell at fixed prices, show "price on request" for high-value stones, and take enquiries by WhatsApp or email.

How do I sell gemstones online from Sri Lanka?

You need a store that builds trust, a payment provider that accepts Sri Lankan businesses such as PayHere or PayPal, and insured international shipping. You also need the correct NGJA and export approvals, which we do not advise on; please confirm those with the NGJA or a licensed agent.

What is the best platform to sell jewellery online?

For most jewellers, Shopify is the safest choice because checkout, security and multi-currency selling are managed for you, and the theme can be fully custom. WooCommerce suits sellers already on WordPress. Marketplaces like eBay and Etsy add reach but take a fee on every sale.

Can buyers see the certificate, carat and treatment for each stone?

Yes. We set up structured product fields so every stone shows carat, colour, clarity, origin, treatment, dimensions and a downloadable lab report. Buyers can filter by these details, and the same data feeds Google product listings.

Does Shopify Payments work in Sri Lanka?

No. Shopify Payments is not available to Sri Lankan stores, so cards are taken through a third-party provider such as PayHere, with PayPal and bank transfer as extra options. Shopify adds its own fee on the Basic plan when you use a third-party gateway.
